In response to the unexpected death of Kayne’s mother, Donda West, a new law in her name will hopefully tame the cosmetic surgery circuit in California. One of the main highlights of this new law is that is is now mandatory for everyone to have a medical checkup before having any cosmetic operations. This will hopefully make it less likely for silent medical conditions, like coronary artery disease, to interrupt the usually pleasant and uneventful experience of elective plastic surgery.
The current recommendations in most states for preoperative medical clearance include:
1- Routine blood work and an EKG for people over 40 years old
2- A full medical evaluation and a documented letter of “clearance” for anyone, regardless of age, who has a treatable medical condition
3- Advanced blood tests for people who have a history of easy bruising or bleeding with prior surgeries, or for those who have had blood clots in the past
4- A chest Xray for anyone over 70 years old, for active smokers of any age, and for anyone with known pulmonary disease regardless of age.
There’s no way to say for sure if this law would have saved Donda’s life, but it’s definitely a step in the right direction towards tighter regulations on cosmetic surgery in a state where 40% of doctors performing cosmetic procedures have NO surgical training.
